Lectures in Musicology: “Centering Artists and their Communities in Hip Hop Higher Education” with Dr. Mark Katz

Date: Monday, October 9, 2023, 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Location: 18th Avenue Library, Room 205

Cost: Free

Join us for the first event in the Lectures in Musicology series on Monday, October 9! Dr. Mark Katz of University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill will present his talk "Centering Artists and their Communities in Hip Hop Higher Education." In this lecture, Katz argues that it is vital for any hip hop-related scholarship, pedagogy, or advocacy to center the artists and communities who live and create this culture.

Katz is John P. Barker Distinguished Professor of Music at UNC–Chapel Hill and Founding Director of the U.S. State Department hip hop cultural diplomacy program, Next Level.

This lecture is co-sponsored by The Ohio State University Libraries; the Mershon Center for International Security Studies; and EMIC, the graduate student organization for the study of expressive culture. We are grateful for funding provided by the Center for Ethics and Human values.

Can’t make it? Dr. Katz will be giving another talk earlier in the day as part of Mershon Monday. This talk, titled “Hip Hop Diplomacy: A View from the State Department,” will take place from 12-1:30pm in Derby Hall 1039. RSVP required.
