  • Professional Growth Program Description

    • The professional growth series are a number of structured activities in which students work with various partners from the University and in the city of Columbus. This series assists students in developing skills, qualifications, and experiences that will enhance their ability to progress through their career.
  • Professional Growth Programs Learning Outcomes

    • Identify office, departments, programs, and other resources that contribute to their abilities to successfully progress through their professional career path;
    • Explain how the programs and services offered by OUAB Grad/Prof are able to aid in their professional growth;
    • Translate how the skills and topics covered and developed in workshops and programs can aid in their professional development.
  • Individual Program Descriptions

    • Job Search Series ( Academic & Non- Academic)

      • Preparing for the Job Search: This workshop will provide useful information about the job search process. Information will be provided about helpful tips when starting your job search, where and how to look for openings, as well as what materials need to be prepared.
      • Curriculum Vitae and Cover Letter Workshops: This workshop will address how to write vitae and cover letters when searching for jobs in academia. Importance will be placed on format and content while highlighting career tips useful when applying for positions with a teaching and/or research emphasis.
      • Teaching and Research Statements: This workshop will address how to write vitae and cover letters when searching for jobs in academia. Importance will be placed on format and content while highlighting career tips useful when applying for positions with a teaching and/or research emphasis.
      • Preparing for the Interview: Learn what to do before, during, and after an interview for positions in academia. Emphasis will be on career strategies, interviewing techniques, and familiarity with academic interview expectations. Samples of questions and practice opportunities will be provided, as well as useful suggestions to enhance confidence skills.
      • Negotiating the Job Offer: Learn what to do when a search committee is prepared to offer you a faculty position. We’ll provide strategies for responding to a department’s offer, share some of the common elements of job offers around which candidates might negotiate, and introduce approaches that can help both parties—the job candidate and the hiring department—communicate effectively throughout the process of negotiation.
      • Resume Enhancement Workshop: Create an effective resume or improve the one you already have. Transform your resume into a powerful tool that will get you interviews. This workshop will lead you through a self-assessment series so you will have extensive knowledge about the product you are marketing YOU! Learn different resume formats and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Write an employment objective that shows potential employers that you have direction. Make the most of your work experience. Know what to reveal in a resume, and what to keep to yourself. Learn to overcome gaps in work history and age discrimination. Discover how to use references to your advantage. This course includes the use of online resumes and Internet Resume Secrets. This course is invaluable for anyone who wants to create their own resume, or learn how to write resumes and cover letters for profit.
    • Etiquette Dinner:

      • Enjoy a delectable meal and learn proper dining etiquette that will dazzle your friends and family—not to mention prospective employers! An etiquette expert will guide participants through a sit down, 3-course meal, providing lessons on everything from eating utensils to interesting conversation starters. Don't miss out on this opportunity
    • Professional Development Workshops:

      •  Every other Tuesday during the academic semester join OUAB Grad/Prof for their professional development workshops. Each program aligns with one of our seven core competencies areas: communication, career development, leadership and management, teaching, responsible conduct of research, personal development, and ethics.
    • IDP Workshop:

      •  You have put a lot of time and effort into pursuing your PhD degree.  Now it's time to focus on how to leverage your expertise into a satisfying and productive career.   An individual development plan (IDP) helps you explore career possibilities and set goals to follow the career path that fits you best.
