Hate those unflattering Xs that get marked on your hand? Feel strongly about keeping the drinking age at 21? Come out and voice your opinion at this hot topic debate about lowering the drinking age! Two qualified speakers, Barret Seaman and William Dejong, will be debating the issue and taking questions from you: the college student who is mostly affected by this issue.

Barrett Seaman, a veteran journalist, is in favor of lowering the drinking age to 18. After a 30-year career as a correspondent and editor for TIME magazine, Barrett applied his expertise and experience to a study of contemporary college life in his book Binge: Campus Life in an Age of Disconnection and Excess. The result of two-and-a-half years of living among students at twelve leading colleges and universities, his book is an unvarnished look at a generation of young Americans plagued by anxieties, living in a culture steeped in alcohol and disconnected from the adult world around them, yet a generation that is intellectually gifted, ambitious and idealistic. Barrett has been a Trustee of Hamilton College since 1989 and currently chairs the board’s committee on student life.

William DeJong is in favor of keeping the drinking age at 21. He formerly directed the Center for College Health and Safety, as well as the U.S. Department of Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention . William also served as a member of the board of directors of MADD and on the Panel on Prevention and Treatment of College Alcohol Problems. Currently, William serves as Executive Director for Research and Analysis at Outside the Classroom Inc. and is a Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Boston University of Public Health.
