It’s April. In my humble opinion, that is not even remotely close to being okay. Here’s a friendly reminder to get your taxes done, and now I’m taking this particular piece in a different direction!
In response to the thousands of inquiries I received regarding my Spring Break in the Pacific Northwest, it was lovely. I didn't even know that one person read this column, let alone thousands! So it was a nice treat to hear from all of you.
In the meantime and betweentime, my roommate took the trip of a lifetime to Providence, Rhode Island on Alternative Spring Break... which is yet another great program facilitated by my friends and yours, The Ohio Union. The Alternative Break programs (there are trip options for Winter, Spring, and Summer) provide a low-cost trip with fellow students to complete some sort of community service project. What a great way to link The Ohio State University with communities around the world!
While my roomie was off saving the world, I was thinking a lot about community service in general. For those of you who are sadly saying sayonara (alliteration rules!) to OSU in a couple of months, service is a great way to leave your mark on the campus of Ohio State and even the greater Central Ohio community.
If you did not have the knowledge and/or opportunity to take advantage of an Alternative Break trip, FEAR NOT! There are ample opportunities to give back to your current surroundings. Another great way to get involved with these great causes is the SERV (Students Engaged in Responsible Volunteering) Team. The SERV Team organizes campuswide service opportunities, and are also more than willing to help you arrange a service opportunity for any student organization or group of friends you may be involved in. Check them out here! http://ohiounion.osu.edu/studentorgs/leadership_service.asp
Maybe you're looking for an even easier/more musical way to serve your community? OUAB and Buckeyethon are helping out Nationwide Children's Hospital on Friday, April 3! Buckeyethon Benefit Concert featuring Guster is taking place that night at Newport Music Hall. Two tickets ($5/each) are available per BUCKID at the Ohio Union Info Desk. 100% of the profits from ticket sales will be donated to Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Trusting that you're now all equipped with the necessary tools to explore your community service options in the coming months, I'll see you around in May with my final column.
In like a lion out like a lamb,
Brooke Bockelman,
OUAB President
